David Smeyers

David Smeyers was born in Detroit, U.S.A. He received his Masters of Music Degree at The Juilliard School in New York City and completed his musical studies in France with a Fulbright Grant. There he was a prizewinner at the International Clarinet Competitions in Toulon and Paris. As a soloist and chamber musician David Smeyers has appeared at numerous festivals throughout Europe, North and South America as well as Asia (e.g. Berliner Festwochen, Radar Festival – Mexico City, Flanders Festival, Festival Acanthes, Münchener Biennale, Steirischer Herbst) where he has taken part in over 150 world premieres. He has performed with orchestra, among others, the solo concertos of Mozart, Weber, Spohr and Nielsen. From 1977-1985 he was a member of the Parisian Ensemble Kaleidocollage and from 1986-2003 of ensemble avance and quartet avance. In 1980 Das Klarinettenduo Beate Zelinsky/David Smeyers was founded. David Smeyers has toured with the Keller Quartet, the Hilliard Ensemble and other chamber music ensembles.

He has copious radio, LP and CD recordings to his credit (Elliott Carter, Adriana Hölszky, Helmut Lachenmann, Max Reger, Daniel Rothman, Giacinto Scelsi and Stefan Wolpe). He composed and performed the theatre music to Hans Neuenfels’ production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Rose Tattoo” at the Residenz Theater in Munich.

David Smeyers has published many articles concerning the clarinet and New Music. In 2003 he accepted a position as Professor for New Music Direction at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne where he founded and directs ensemble 20/21 (NEOS 11810-11). David Smeyers lives in Cologne.
